Wa, Feb. 3, GNA - Some 20 professional teachers in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district of the Northern region, who successfully completed their courses in 2007 have threatened to leave the district if their salary arrears are not paid to them by the end of February. Mr Yirnaa Mathew, a spokesperson for the teachers, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wa that his group was among the first batch of teachers who graduated in July 2007 and that 43 of them were posted to the district same year.
He said 17 of them received full salary arrears and put on their right salary scales while 13 others were paid their salaries but without any arrears.
Mr Mathew said 10 teachers among his group were still living on allowances and expressed regret that all dialogue and correspondence with the district Director of Education and other relevant authorities to resolve the issue since August 2008 proved futile. Mr Frank Aflakpui, District Director of Education, declined to comment on the issue.
