Techiman Assembly spends 1.2 billion cedis on projects

Techiman (B/A), Aug. 2, GNA - The Techiman Municipal Assembly is to spend 1.2 billion cedis out of its District Assemblies' Common Fund (DACF) for this year on on-going projects in the Municipality. The projects include human resource development, productivity and income generating activities, community initiated projects and the Municipal Education Fund, which offers scholarships and bursaries to students.

Others are the provision of office accommodation for the development of sub-structures of Tuobodom and Krobo Town Councils and HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention and control programmes. Mr S. Agyeman-Badu, Municipal Budget Officer, announced this at an emergency meeting of the Assembly, attended by Heads of Government Departments and Agencies. He said the Assembly had approved a supplementary budget of 4.958 billion cedis for the utilisation of its share of the Common Fund this year on "mandatory and discretionary basis".

Mr Agyeman-Badu said 800 million cedis had been allocated for the discretionary construction of an administrative block for the Assembly, 580 million cedis for the construction of classrooms and health infrastructure under the promotion of district capital 111 and 500 million cedis as counterpart fund for the construction of 102 boreholes for 11 institutions and two small town water systems at Aworowa and Forikrom.

Other projects under the discretionary allocation were private sector development, a data base project of numbering of houses, rehabilitation of town roads and street lights, while the construction of a two-storey market block of stores in Techiman had been projected, the Budget Officer added.

Mr Isaac Osei-Antwi, Municipal Chief Executive, urged members to provide regular and adequate information to the electorate on the efforts the Assembly was making towards face-lifting the municipality. "You will be doing a great disservice if you should fail to explain the policies and programmes of the Assembly, especially the utilisation of the Assembly's Common Fund to the people," he said. Mr Emmanuel Twi-Yeboah, Presiding Member, asked Members to lead exemplary lives and to educate the people on deliberations at the Assembly's sittings.
