Drivers in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region who ply the Amantin-Atebubu-Yeji road have called for more police patrol to reduce armed robbery on that stretch.

The Amantin-Atebubu-Yeji stretch of road has for over years recorded many armed robbery incidents with market women being the worst target.

In June 2016, Constable Frank Klu of Atebubu, was gunned down by armed robbers. Last month a prison officer at Nsawam Prisons, Nana Yaw Antwi, was killed at Akokoa while he was returning from a wedding in Atebubu.

According to the drivers, driving on that road was a major headache “because we live in fear of being attacked by armed robbers.”

A driver in an interview with Today, Abraham Nana Fordjour, said the armed robbery cases were affecting drivers and passengers.

“The robbery cases are really affecting us because they do not spare anyone they come across. Just last week, a colleague of mine was killed by armed robbers. We are calling for joint police-military patrols which we believe will help fight the robbery menace,” Fordjour noted.

The numerous robbery incidents, he said, were affecting business activities at Atebubu, Yeji, Kwame Danso and Kejeji.

The Pru District Police Commander, Superintendent Godfred Obeng Asare, said his outfit will put in place more police checks to deal with the menace

Although he said they were under-resourced, he assured that they will do their best to protect lives and properties in the area.
