A leading member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has called on newly sworn-in President John Mahama to clearly define the exact role of his Vice President, Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang.

According to Jantuah, Ghanaians do not want to hear any excuses from the Vice President at the end of her term, claiming she was merely a "driver's mate" and unable to make crucial decisions, as was alleged by the immediate past Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During the election campaign for the 2024 Presidential election, Dr. Bawumia, who was the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, urged Ghanaians to vote for him as the next President, emphasizing his readiness to implement policies for the country's growth.

"As Vice President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver's seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and priorities.

“Clearly, the initial conditions that we inherited in 2017 are not the same as those in 2025. Therefore, my priorities will be different. We have done many good things, and I will seek to build on them,” Dr. Bawumia stated in one of his addresses.

Though he claimed he lacked the constitutional authority to take certain decisions as Vice President, his campaign team credited him with being the architect of the Akufo-Addo government's digitalization initiatives.

Speaking on TV3, as monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, January 6, 2025, Kwame Jantuah stated that defining the Vice President’s role would enable Ghanaians to hold her accountable for her actions and inactions during her four-year term.

"The President should make sure that he tells us exactly the job of the Vice President. We don't want a situation for somebody to come and tell us I was the driver's mate. Everybody knows exactly what the responsibilities are, and he should let us know whether the back stops with him or they work together.

"Because the Vice President is the only person who does not need an appointment to see the President. Four years down the line, we don't want her [Vice President Naana Opoku Agyemang] to tells us she was a driver's mate and knows nothing about some key government decisions." Jantuah stated.
