Tema, (Greater Accra) 3 Oct.,
Members of the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) today called on the Management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to move to the sewer construction site in community three, Tema to correct the overflow of raw sewer from the flats which is creating an environmental hazard. The members made the call while on tour of development projects the assembly has undertaken in the past year. They were not happy to see raw sewer running through gutters. Mr. Patrice Kpodo Allotey, Municipal horticulturist who conducted the assembly members round the area where trees are dying as a result of the overflow, said the trees are taking excess water which they cannot contain adding that there is too much organic matter in the sewer. Nii Armah Ashietey, the municipal chief executive directed the co- ordinating director to write to SSNIT and inform them about the serious problems being caused by the over-flow. He said a similar situation can happen at the SSNIT flats at Sakumono estate, because a common sewer system was provided for the houses there. Mr. Emmanuel Ofoe, the co-ordinating director, disclosed that they had written several letters about the distortions in the construction which have caused the overflow but SSNIT has not rpt not taken any action. Some of the projects visited are a six-classroomed block at Gbeshile, a 52-unit shopping centre, a JSS workshop and a health centre, all at Ashaiman and a six-classroomed block at Adjei Kojo.
