Police occupants of the Tema Community 8 Police Barracks have been caught allegedly stealing power.

The power bypass came to light during an operation by the team of the Special Revenue Protection Exercise of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

To the team’s surprise, prepaid meters were found in the barracks even though the law frowns on it.

According to the ECG, police officers are not billed directly as their consumption amount is added to the bills of MIDA's. It was, therefore, surprising the officers had bypassed power, making it difficult to ascertain the right consumption levels, Starr News’ Osei Owusu Amankwaah, who is with the team, reported.

The Manager of Public Relations of the ECG Agyei Larbi told Starr Business investigation will be carried out to ascertain circumstances which led to the installation of prepaid meters at the barracks.

Bypassing of a meter is a technique used to prevent a meter from reading the right consumption. The team also disconnected other residential facilities in Tema for allegedly stealing power.

The ECG is embarking on a massive meter auditing nationwide to curtail power theft. Since the beginning of the exercise Gh¢ 31 million has been retrieved.
