Tema Police region records 23 deaths

Tema, Aug. 20, GNA- The Tema Regional Police Command from January to June this year, recorded 290 accidents out of which 23 people died while others sustained various degrees of injuries.

A release signed by Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, Tema Police Public Relations Officer said the Tema-Ada to Sogakope highway, described as the most dangerous route, recorded the highest number of 45 cases of which 23 deaths were recorded.

It said fines totalling 133.231 million cedis were imposed on offenders by the courts.

The release noted that drivers, who ply the Tema-Sogakope highway currently under construction, do so at top speed, cause dust on other motorists and this resulted in accidents.

In Tema, the release said reckless driving, non-maintenance of vehicles, driving under the influence of alcohol, and overloading of passengers constitute traffic offences. It advised drivers to be law-abiding.

In another development, the Tema Police has arrested Yakubu Musah who together with two others now at large, last Sunday attacked Mr Kwabena Ameyaw, a taxi driver at Tema community nine, seized his car tape valued at 1.2 million cedis and cash of 350,000 cedis cash. The attackers ordered Mr Ameyaw to pass through the Ashaiman underpass where they attempted to snatch the taxi from him. It said Musah has been placed in custody while the rest are being sought for.
