Workers in Tema are bent on their planned demonstration on Wednesday despite appeals to call it off. The workers plan to drive in a convoy to Accra to present a petition to Employment Minister over the delay in negotiations for an upward adjustment of the minimum wage.
On Monday, a delegation of the Ghana Employers Association met with the leadership of the workers in Tema to persuade them against the strike action.
The Executive Secretary of the Employers Association, Rose Karikari Annang, assured the workers that the tripartite committee will conclude discussions on the minimum wage at its next meeting on Thursday. The GEA is concerned about the impact of the planned demonstration on productivity in view of the fact that Tema is the industrial hub of the country.
However the chairman of the Tema District Council of Labour, Wilson Agana is not sure whether the workers will heed the advice not to go ahead with the demonstration. This is because the workers think the negotiations is dragging.
