Tema Youth, NYC in a Tussle

TROUBLE IS brewing between the Tema Youth Association (TYA) and the Tema municipal office, of the National Youth Council (NYC), which is withdrawing the certificate of recognition from the TYA.

A letter dated February 28, 2002, from the office of the Tema branch of the NYC and signed by the co-ordinator, Mr. S. Mensah-Etsibah, to the secretary of TYA reads "In line with our objective of re-strategizing youth development, we are adopting innovative measures to enhance youth programmes.

Subsequently your certificate of recognition dated 24th June 1999, with registration number NYC/GTA/TMS/001/99 is hereby withdrawn effective March 1, 2002."

As a result, executives of TYA, spearheaded by its chairman, David Titus-Glover, have filed an interlocutory injunction at the Tema High Court, praying the court to restrain the NYC, their agents, servants, privies from re-launching the TYA.

In a statement of claim, the association has carried on its activities within the confines of the law and its objectives.

They stated that the purported withdrawal of the certificate of recognition was made without due process of the law and constitute an infringement on their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

They contend that the Tema municipal youth coordinator at all material times did not act fairly and reasonably, nor did he comply with the requirements imposed on him by law, by unilaterally withdrawing the said certificate of recognition.

The executives of TYA have not been dissolved or removed from office
