Tema fights rodents

Tema metropolitan assembly in partnership with waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana, has embarked on a sanitation campaign to rid the main market at Tema Community one of rodents.

Tema community one is the nerve center of the Tema metropolis. It is also home of the main market which serves the entire metropolis. But the market faces a unique problem - an influx of rodents, particularly mice. Traders here are worried about the mice infestation and have persistently called on the metropolitan assembly to disinfect the market.

To this end, the TMA in collaboration with waste management company, Zoomlion, has embarked on a fumigation exercise to rid the market of the rodents.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Kempes Ofosuware, said some of the recent market fires could have been caused by mice who he says chews on electric cables, exposing the live wires. “Our focus on the market is not only to put up security measures to prevent possible fire outbreaks, but also ensure that the market operates in a hygienic environment," he says

He added that these mice also feed on wares of the market women, leading to financial loss, hence the decision to partner Zoomlion Ghana Company in fumigating the market and ultimately getting rid of the mice.

Meanwhile, the environmental officer at the Tema metropolitan assembly in charge of the central business district, Mr. Edward Anirinka says: “We are still educating people on similar incidents, and the fumigation exercise will go on throughout the rest of the regions in order to prevent rodents especially mice from destroying our market and also causing possible fire outbreaks.”
