Ten female engineering students benefits from Vodafone scholarship

Accra, Oct. 5, GNA - Vodafone Ghana, has awarded ten female engineering students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Ghana Telecom University scholarships to complete their final year course in engineering.

A statement issued in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday said: “The students, who are on track to securing first class degree and second class upper degrees, have been awarded scholarships which will cover their academic and residential fees.”

It said the awardees would also get internship opportunities within the technology team at the company and access to mentors, who would train and provide them with expert guidance.

Announcing the winners at a ceremony, the Director of Human Resource at Vodafone Ghana, Stella Appiah-Nkansah said, “Vodafone Ghana is passionate about addressing the gender inequality in the field of engineering and technology.”

The statement said the introduction of the ‘Vodafone Female Engineering Students Award’ was to increase the percentage of females in the engineering profession.

“Total of 53 female students applied for the scholarship, out of which ten were selected. ‘Out of this number, eight are from KNUST and two from the Ghana Telecom University,” it explained.

It also stressed on Vodafone’s commitment to bringing advancement, development and empowerment to women in Ghana and noting that “we believe, we can achieve this through education – the tool that is known to break barriers.”

The statement noted that through the scholarships these awardees would be supported to achieve their educational goals to make meaningful contributions to their own development and to national development as a whole.
