Ten-million dollar loan to shelter soldiers

Accra, Jan. 26, GNA- Government is to secure a 10-million dollar loan for a comprehensive accommodation programme for the Ghana Armed Forces, Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor, Minister of Defence, told Parliament on Thursday.

He said the provision of residential accommodation had been one of the major problems facing the personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces in spite of various attempts made by successive governments. The Minister, who was answering parliamentary questions in the House said: "These efforts have been intensified since this government assumed power in 2001."

Under the second phase of the Ghana Armed Forces Housing Project, 34.15 billion cedis had been spent so far.

He said twenty-seven residential accommodation units have been completed for use of the soldiers since 2001.

The Minister said 31.3 billion cedis had been spent on forty on-going housing units at various levels of completion. Dr Addo-Kufuor said the Ministry of Defence needed a total amount of 15.30 billion cedis to complete those projects.

He said the Ministry of Defence had realised that it cannot rely solely on the consolidated fund in finding lasting solution to the accommodation problem.
