A rift has surfaced within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following pointed criticism by Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore highlighting underlying tensions and dissatisfaction.
Afriye specifically criticised party leaders, including Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa, General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, and National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, accusing them of neglecting the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold of the NPP.
He alleged that the region’s significance has been overlooked in favor of securing a deputy minority leader position in Parliament.
Afriye expressed frustration over the sidelining of the Ashanti Region despite its critical contributions to the party, arguing that it lacks sufficient leadership roles and influence on key issues.
“No one should be happy about the enormity of betrayal to Ashanti by some selfish few of us and the selling of strength and rightful position in leadership to other regional caucuses,” Afriyie stated in a message on an NPP Members of Parliament page with the group name: ‘Official MPs and PCs Platform.’
The medical practitioner turned politician, singled out Patricia Appiagyei, saying, “You are a very selfish and a big betrayal to Ashanti caucus and council. It’s all about you and not what we all stand for.”
He further said: “Mama Pat: You are a very selfish and a big betrayal to Ashanti caucus and council. It’s all about you and not what we all stand for. In 2008 when we lost elections Ashanti came together and took the minority”
“Today you, Koduah and Nana B have sold us the region with the largest caucus for just a deputy leader”.
He also raised concerns about Appiagyei’s involvement in the caucus meeting, questioning, “Why didn’t you argue for the leader so it would have brought the matter to rest? You sat in till a determination of what we wanted was established.”
The MP voiced his dissatisfaction and frustration with the party's decision-making approach, asserting that it has resulted in the Ashanti Region being sidelined.
Ayew Afriye criticised the limited representation of the Ashanti Region in prominent leadership roles.
“So far, our toil and suffering have not made Ashanti fit for a leader or Chief Whip. What is our value, then, for being relegated to just a deputy minority leader?” he questioned.
He once again criticised Asokwa MP, Patricia Appiagyei, for accepting the role of Deputy Minority Leader.
“You have never spoken on any issue from this position on the floor, nor have you led any business. This is a shameful role for a distinguished group like ours,” Dr. Afriye fumed.
