Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, during a parliamentary proceeding, hilariously mocked the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East Constituency, Paul Twum Barimah, after he lost his seat in the recently concluded 2024 parliamentary elections.
During the session on December 17, 2024, the MP stood up to make a submission, prompting the Speaker to inquire,” Hon member I couldn't get it, what is your name?
He responded, “Mr. Speaker, my name is Paul Twum Barimah.”
The Speaker followed up with another question: “Which constituency?”
He replied, “Dormaa East Constituency.”
After the MP’s response, his colleagues hilariously remarked that he had lost his seat to an elderly woman in his constituency. The Speaker, picking up on the comment, probed further, asking for clarification.
Paul Twum Barimah then said, “Mr. Speaker, it is very unfortunate that an old lady kicked my ass.”
This remark drew laughter, after which the Speaker wittily retorted, “Oh, you lost the election? That is why you want to be heard for the last time.”
Rachel Amma Owusuaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the 2024 Parliamentary election in the Dormaa East constituency of the Bono Region made history by winning the seat.
She secured 12,310 votes to beat her targeted rival, Mr Paul Apreku Twum-Barima, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) who had 12,050 votes.
An Independent Candidate, Emmanuel Gyabaah also obtained 126 votes, out of the 24,486 valid votes cast. There were 314 rejected ballots.
