The courtroom is the place to go, not the court of public opinion – Minority to Attorney General

The Minority in Parliament has called on Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine to prosecute cases in court rather than through public pronouncements.

At a press conference on March 24, 2025, Dr. Ayine discussed probes linked to the previous administration, including a contentious raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.

However, addressing the press on Tuesday March 25, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, urged the Attorney General to seek judicial adjudication instead of conducting a media trial of former government officials if he truly believes in his claims.

“As the chief enforcer of our laws, the Attorney General must remain neutral, act above board, and protect the rights of every citizen. We have observed that through his many press conferences, he is effectively declaring the guilt of individuals under investigation.

"Why publicize investigations before they are concluded? It appears he is trying his cases in the court of public opinion. If that is his intent, he should not step foot in a courtroom. However, if he believes he has a strong case against any former government official, the courtroom—not the press is where he should present it,” he stated.

The Minority called on the Attorney General to respect the rule of law and follow due legal procedures rather than engaging in sensationalism.

They further insisted that Dr. Ayine, as both Attorney General and Minister of Justice, must uphold the constitutional presumption of innocence, warning that his public statements risk tainting judicial proceedings.
