Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu North and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), James Klutse Avedzi, has lamented how Mobile Money, commonly known as MoMo, has increased the burden on lawmakers.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker, who has been in parliament since 2005, said the introduction of Mobile Money or MoMo has changed how constituents make demands on their lawmakers.

According to the MP, when he entered parliament in January 2005, there were limited mobile network companies, so people would wait for him to come to the constituency before meeting him to solve their problems.

“When I entered parliament in January 2005, we didn’t have mobile networks where all these issues would come to you. It is when you go to the constituency that they hear you have come, and then they will come to you. But now, text messages, WhatsApp messages, calls, and the worst of it all is MoMo. So, you can’t give an excuse,” he said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

The Public Accounts Committee Chair said that no matter what part of the country you are in, constituents can bill you and request MoMo.

“Even if you are in Bolga or in Tamale, in Dzodze or Afife or Tajeho in my constituency, it’s a matter of 'send my MoMo to me.' You cannot even meet all the demands because your salary is not even enough to satisfy all demands, so you have to be managing,” the lawmaker said.
