A Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, has said that Ghanaians have not lost trust in the commission..
According to him, the Electoral Commission received a great endorsement from domestic election observers in 2020.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issue he stated, “The reason why I don’t think so is that in 2020 we did the elections, the domestic observers including the local media, international observers, who came from the African Union, ECOWAS, European Union (EU), they gave the commission a massive endorsement of the work we did.”
Dr. Asare added that the commission was awarded a 95% score by the European Union which made it surpass several African countries.
He said, "You see, the same EU went to other countries in Africa and when you look at the report about those countries, per Ghana standard it is very very unacceptable.
"So, we think at times it depends on where you are getting the information from, there are a lot of you in the media, a lot of misinformation and disinformation, mal-information in the public domain,” he added.
The Deputy EC chairperson explained that when one studies and understands the processes of the EC, it will be known that what the public says is not true.
"Because anyone who has engaged us and analysed the work we do, we have Electoral Commissions around our continent who come and study what we do. So any one who takes the time to understand our processes, you realise that what the people are saying is not the case.”
From Dr. Asare's point of view, Ghana's EC is one of the best institutions in the country because it is a very transparent body.
"We think that we have one of the best institutions in our country when it comes to the EC, our processes are completely transparent.”
He further stated, “Do you know that when we are going to print the ballot papers, all the political parties are supposed to send their agents.
"When we are transporting ballot papers to all the regions, the party's accompany the ballot papers and when it gets to the regional capitals they go to the regional police, all the parties put their seal on it.”
