In his final Christmas address to the nation, outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reflected on the successful conclusion of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, describing the event as a ‘monumental milestone’ in the country’s democratic journey.

Speaking on December 24, President Akufo-Addo extended his congratulations to the newly-elected leaders while also addressing concerns over post-election violence.

“Fellow Ghanaians, this year, we have achieved another monumental milestone in our national development with a peaceful, free, and fair election of a new president and new members of parliament,” he stated.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the president-elect and the MPs-elect. Wisdom, strength, and God’s blessings as they prepare to lead our beloved nation.”

The president’s message was characterized by a tone of optimism and pride in Ghana’s democratic resilience, highlighting the country’s reputation as a beacon of peace and stability in the region.

However, his celebration of the electoral process was tempered by a firm condemnation of violence that marred parts of the post-election period.

“I must nevertheless condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unnecessary acts of violence that have tarnished an otherwise exemplary democratic exercise,” he added, addressing incidents that have raised concerns among citizens and observers alike.
