The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed disappointment over the negative label being assigned to politicians in the country due to failed governance.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on September 22, 2024, Haruna Iddrisu lamented that being a politician in the country no longer carries any honor or status, unlike in the past when politicians were revered and respected.
The lawmaker attributed the current disdain and disregard for politicians among Ghanaians to the poor governance of the ruling government under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Bawumia.
“…With the unprecedented hardship and suffering Nana Addo Dankwa and Dr. Bawumia have unleashed on every Ghanaian, I think that they should admit that it’s a failed government. Failed in the sense that there is no honor or respect even in being an elite at the political level with Ghanaians saying that ‘you politicians have no honor’,” he said.
Haruna Iddrisu, the former minority leader, further criticised the government for significantly contributing to the current state of the economy, which has pushed many Ghanaians into poverty and made it difficult for them to make a living due to the cost-of-living crisis and the depreciation of the cedi.
He added that the current hardship affecting the country is evidence of the failed governance and leadership of the ruling government.
“Today you have the cedi which was at 4 cedis now at 16 cedis. What that means for the cost of doing business, what that means for the cost of living is one of a rejection of a failed government. The cost of living has ballooned and many Ghanaians are struggling to make a living, businesses are struggling with high cost of doing business,” he added.
