A Ghanaian medical doctor, Dr. Joyce Emefa Addo-Klah, was the heroine aboard KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight KL 589 from Amsterdam when an emergency situation presented itself.
Demonstrating exceptional professionalism and courage during the medical emergency on the flight towards Accra on December 11, 2024, she has earned for herself a lot of plaudits, especially after she saved the life of a patient.
According to a report by adomonline.com, four hours into the journey, a passenger suddenly fell ill, prompting the cabin crew to call for medical assistance.
Dr. Addo-Klah, who was traveling with her husband, an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist; and their son, immediately responded to the call by retrieving her medical bag from the overhead compartment to assist the distressed passenger.
The report noted that after assessing the situation, she administered an injection from the airline’s emergency medical kit, stabilising the patient.
The patient was transported to the business class section as part of efforts to ensure privacy and reduce anxiety among passengers and his condition was continuously monitored by the doctor throughout the period.
The doctor's swift action reassured passengers, who had initially been alarmed by the emergency announcement.
Thanks to her intervention, the patient remained stable for the rest of the journey, and the plane landed safely in Accra without further complications.
The cabin crew commended Dr. Addo-Klah for her heroic efforts, which they noted likely prevented a more severe outcome.
In recognition of her outstanding service, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines rewarded her with an on-board treat and a discounted ticket package for her next flight, the report added.
