The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress, Rashid Tanko-Computer has launched a scathing attack against the Electoral Commission following issues surrounding the declaration of winners for disputed parliamentary seats.

According to Rashid Tanko-Computer, despite the NDC's opposition, the Electoral Commission engaged in what he considers illegalities by declaring NPP candidates as winners for certain seats, even though the NDC had initially won those seats.

He criticised the Electoral Commission for what he termed as lawless actions, accusing it of breaching and violating electoral laws and processes.

To Rashid, the Electoral Commission must be purged to prevent such occurrences from happening again and to ensure the institution's credibility.

“Whatever happened at the High Court was a travesty of justice. There was no way we were going to allow it to go because a dangerous precedent was going to be set with that kind of ruling. You saw what happened the following day, where they involved themselves in illegal activity. The EC defied the process at the Supreme Court and went ahead to do their own thing. This lawless EC must be purged,” he added.

He expressed confidence in the party's efforts to regain several parliamentary seats initially declared for them.

Following the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday, December 27, 2024, overturning the High Court's decision, Tanko-Computer pledged that the party would pursue legal action to reclaim the seven parliamentary seats currently in dispute due to disagreements and conflicts between the parties and the Electoral Commission.

He stated that they will present their case at the High Court to secure the three remaining seats out of the seven seats, emphasising that they will not rest until the will of the Ghanaian people is upheld.

“We are happy and it’s a victory for democracy. We will go back to the High Court as the order has been given for the three constituencies left and argue our case. Now we are back to about 186 seats in Parliament because we have taken 4 seats today and we are going to take the outstanding 3 too, we’ll follow them till casket, we are not going to leave it,” he stressed.

Background

Following an order by the Accra High Court to resolve the results in some disputed constituencies, the Electoral Commission recollated the election results, reversing the seats in favor of the NPP, despite having previously declared the NDC as the winners of those seats.

The disputed parliamentary seats are Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri and Dome Kwabenya constituencies.
