Accra, Jan.26, GNA - Three people including a Senior Ward Assistant at the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, have been placed in police custody at Madina near Accra for allegedly causing an abortion.
They are Mr. Jen-Claude Michael Amekey, the Ward Assistant, Mr Emmanuel Anani a teacher and boyfriend of the victim and Mr John Teye Boateng, a student.
The Madina District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr. Kwabena Antwi-Boasiako, told the Ghana News Agency that sometime in November last year, the victim who is a seamstress and girl friend of Anani informed Anani that she was pregnant.
DSP Antwi-Boasiako said Anani approached his friend Boateng the student about his intention to abort the pregnancy.
He said on November 11, Boateng informed Anani about a friend Amekey who lived at Aboman a village near Abokobi and could assist him (Anani) to abort the pregnancy for 500,000 cedis.
DSP Antwi-Boasiako said a few days after the alleged abortion, the victim started bleeding from her vagina and was rushed to the Legon Hospital where she was treated and discharged but the bleeding continued.
He said on January 15, this year the victim's condition deteriorated and a report was made to the Madina Police and a medical form was issued to her to seek further medical attention. DSP Antwi-Boasiako said police investigations revealed that Amekey allegedly performed an abortion on the victim and on January 19, was arrested from his residence at Pantang.
He said a search on the premises of Amekey, the police found 34 disposable syringes, six surgical gloves, five pieces of cotton gauze bandage, some chemicals, an areeba pack card, a 'T' shirt, a Don Garcia Tinto drink, a perfume, a rubber container containing catheters, dettol and other items.
DSP Antwi-Boasiako said further inspection on the thatched house revealed that part of it had been converted into an improvised 'Operating theatre' with a single bed.
He said in that room, some of the instruments used for the alleged abortion were retrieved.
DSP Antwi-Boasiako said the suspects would appear before the Cocoa Affairs Circuit Court for prosecution on Friday, January 27. 26 Jan.06
