Tolon/Kumbungu District organize 3rd STME clinic

Kumbungu, (NR) Sept 7, GNA - The Tolon/ Kumbungu District Directorate of Education is organizing a one-week Science Technology and Mathematics Education clinic (STME) for Senior and Junior Secondary School students at Kumbungu in the Tolon/Kumbungu District.

Some 100 selected students, comprising 70 girls and 30 boys are participating in the STME, which is on the theme: "Scientific and Technological Education, the Hope of the Nation.

Opening the Clinic, Mr. Malik Chimsah, District Coordinator of the STME said the organization of the STME stems from the fact that boys had dominated Science, Mathematics and Technology Education.

He said girls had always avoided the study of Science but noted that the myth surrounding the study of science had been broken since more women had become scientists.

He therefore, called for equal opportunities to be given to both boys and girls in the study of science to contribute their quota to national development and progress.

Mr Chimsah noted: "Science, Mathematics and Technology are undeniable areas when vigorously pursued could bring about rapid growth and development of this nation".

Mr Sumaila Mahama, Headmaster of Kumbungu Senior Secondary School, who chaired the function called on girls to discard the notion that science and mathematics were meant for boys, but rather strive harder and challenge boys.

He commended the Tolon/Kumbungu District Assembly, Bonsali Rural Bank, Action Aid Ghana and other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) who contributed in many ways to promote girls education in district.
