The Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) Dr. Michael Kyeremanteng has announced that the Council is set to regulate the use of 'doctor' title by practitioners.

It is common to see and hear many traditional medicine practitioners on TV and radio calling themselves 'doctor' while touting their competence and how effective their medicines are.

However, speaking to GhanaWeb, on the sidelines of an event organised by the Council in Accra, Dr. Michael Kyeremanteng condemned that practice, adding that it is only the Council which is by law mandated to award the title to a practitioner.

"For someone to use the title Doctor in whichever field, it is only the Council as per Act 575 of Act 2000 that gives the mandate so that, that space will be regulated. Very soon, we are going to have another engagement with stakeholders to launch an advertisement guideline where even the various advertisements are going to be regulated.

"You cannot go on TV or radio and talk about you are a doctor bla bla bla without you going through due processes with the council. So these are all areas of information which is going to help the general public to access any information. You watch someone on TV and you go to the website and type the person's name or his contact number and you'll get all the information pertaining to the practice as it should be or as granted by the Traditional Medicine Practice Council," Dr. Michael Kyeremanteng.
