On Monday, July 1, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia formally informed the national officers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of his selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
The nomination of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh quickly sparked discussions, with some party members, political analysts, and Ghanaians questioning whether NAPO was the right choice to support the Vice President.
One of the vocal critics was Andy Appiah-Kubi, the NPP legislator for Asante Akim North, who believed the party should have chosen a candidate more widely accepted and admired within the party.
Mussa Danquah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, echoed similar concerns, expressing doubts about NAPO's ability to attract floating and undecided voters in the upcoming presidential election on December 7.
To gauge the opinions of ordinary Ghanaians on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh's nomination as Dr. Bawumia's running mate, GhanaWeb's #TrendingGH team interviewed some students from the University of Ghana to hear their thoughts on the Bawumia – NAPO team versus the Mahama – Opoku Agyemang team.
Overall, the students felt that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh appeared charismatic and had the political acumen to rally support for Dr. Bawumia.
However, some students described the NPP's running mate as arrogant, which they believed made him an imperfect fit for a presidential candidate who touted humility as one of his strengths.
