Truce Called On Mobile Phone War

Ghana Telecom the major telecom operator in Ghana has suspended subscription for its US$40 million GSM One Touch mobile phone service which has generated a lot of controversy in the cellular phone sector.

The suspension was on the advise of National Communications Authority (NCA) to pave way for an amicable settlement of the controversy.

Consequently, Millicom company operators of Mobitel mobile phone service, Celltell and Spacefon who commenced legal action against Ghana Telecom for attempting to bring monopoly into the system has withdrawn the case on the prompting of the Ministry of Communications.

Ghana Telecom had been accused of interconnection malpractices and the inability of the regulator, MCA, to enforce fairplay and a level playing field for all operator and the frequency bandwidth being used by Ghana Telecom was only meant for testing.

Ghana Telecom in a statement had said that it had installed one of three infrastructure which will enable Mobitel and the others to call into GT One Touch and Vice-Versa.
