The BBC has announced it will be premiering an investigative piece titled Sex For Grades on sexual harassment by lecturers in West Africa’s most prestigious universities.
The piece will be premiered on BBC's YouTube channel at 6pm on Monday.
Expectations for the premier is fast building up with the hashtag #SexForGradees already trending on Twitter.
For most Twitter users, the issue of students being haunted by lecturers for sex in exchange for academic favours is one that is common on campuses with some users confessing their direct or indirect testimonies.
Many are hoping the exposé will bring to bear realities on a phenomenon much talked about but with little evidence to show.
Some say they want the focus to extend beyond lecturers to reach other persons in the academia including Teaching Assistants.
Others are also sharing ideas on how lecturers who could be victims are reacting to the announcement with some users calling out names of their likely victims, whiles others are sharing scenarios of their reactions.
Meanwhile, some Twitter users are already rationalising the actions of the yet to be named lecturers and others who might be sexually harassing students, with some saying underperforming students also coax lecturers into sexual relationships to gain academic favours.
Others are also saying the exposé forms part of a scheme by the BBC to paint a bad picture of happenings in the region.
Read below some of the tweets:
I’m happy about this cos I have many friends who have shared with me their personal experiences with lecturers who threaten to fail them if they don’t succumb to their sexual advances. I hope this brings justice and encourages more girls and even boys to speak out #SexForGrades https://t.co/stBTgYPVpD

When we were casting for Rated C, almost every student mentioned #SexForGrades as a problem on campus. This documentary is a long time coming. And it can’t end here. We need to see consequences. Too many people have had their lives derailed by these abusers.

True. But let the long hidden truth surface, so the hooligans can learn some lessons. Maybe, just maybe, the #SexForGrades menace will stop; or at least reduce drastically. It’s such despicable act!

No one endorse the acts of the culprit found in the video, but my question to @BBCAfrica and @BBCWorld is why is that such exposé are only on Africans. Is the African always bound to effectuate a crime? Or the bad deeds in the world can only be found in Africa? #SexForGrades

It's my greatest of hope that the #sexforgrades documentary captured some lecturers in @KNUSTGH especially at the History and Political Studies department. That's why where all #sexforgrades happens in Ghana's Tertiary education.

I had a female friend who was really brilliant and beautiful. She didn't allow a lecturer to have sex with her so , he trailed her and connived with his colleague lecturers to trail her. At last the girl stopped schooling and traveled . Smh #sexforgrades
