Two Construction Workers crushed to death

Tadzewu (V/R), Sept. 9, GNA - Two Ghanaian workers of China Jiangxi International Company (CJIC), the Chinese firm constructing the Akatsi-Tadzewu-Dzodze highway, have been run over and killed by the company's tipper truck at a pit at Metsrikasa near Dzodze.

They are Agbeshie Deku, 23, a Scavenger Operator and Korbla Eglah, 40, a night watchman.

Police at Dzodze are holding Joseph Abu, 32, the driver in charge of the CNHTC Tipper Truck with registration number GT6997Y involved in the incidence.

Sources close to the company told the Ghana News Agency that Deku and Eglah, during night duties at the pit last Thursday, decided to take some rest at about 2300 hours at a spot on the edge of the pit.

The sources said Abu, who arrived with the tipper truck that allegedly had no backlights, was reversing to position the truck to load sand crete and unknowingly run over the two who were then asleep.

The sources said Abu, realizing the truck stepped over some objects, came down and found the two dead and raised the alarm.

The sources said some Ghanaian officials of the company rushed to the scene with new tail lights and had them fixed on to the truck to avoid any blame for negligence.

Mr. Akwasi Asafo-Agyei, the Dzodze District Police Commander, confirmed the story and said the police believed the truck's tail lights were fixed after the accident.
