Zuarungu (U/E), March 1, GNA - Two Senior High Schools in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Zuarungu and Zamsetec SHSs, are lacking infrastructure and this is hampering academic work. This came out when the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga, Mr Opam Brow= n Akolbire, visited the schools on Monday to ascertain the level of development and to see how he could help.
At the Zuarungu SHS where the MP presented a 33-seat bus donated by the Ministry of Education to the School, the Head Master, Mr Daniel Iddrisu Dubure, stated that one of the major problems facing the boarding school wa= s lack of dormitories for the students and said as a result of that the schoo= l could not admit more students.
"The few who are even in the school are crowded in the dormitory which= is very dangerous for the students on health grounds," he said. Mr Dubure said the school also lacks Dinning and Assembly halls and that when it came to eating the students, numbering 988, had to visit the small dinning hall in turns.
The Headmaster also complained of lack of accommodation for the staff an= d said they had to commute from far distances to the School and that affected teaching and learning as some of them get to school very late each day. "The School also has problems with water, the School shares the only on= e borehole with a community which is very far and this is a big problem", h= e said.
Mr Francis Banbogo, headmaster of the Zamsetec SHS, told the MP that th= e school which had a population of 961 students lacked classroom. He mentioned lack of accommodation for the staff as another problem. Out of 50 teaching staff only five of them stay 93dilapidated government flats= .."
Mr Bangobo said unlike the other SHSs which have buses the Zamstech SHS had no bus and the only means of transport the school had was a wooden truck which has been using since 1998. "The Science Laboratory of the school is also dilapidated and its equipment obsolete," he said. The MP assured the Schools that he would lobby the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and also liaise with the Municipal Assembly, the Regional Coordinating Council and other stakeholders to come to their aid. On computers, the MP who is an Expert in Information Communication Technology (ICT) assured the schools that he would donate computers to the three SHSs in the Municipality. 0
