Two arraigned for using narcotic drugs

Two people, Victor Adzamavi and Karim Ayoub Mohammed on Thursday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for using narcotic drugs.

They were caught with quantities of dried leaves in a black polythene bag, five wraps of dried leaves, two wraps of partly smoked dried leaves, quantities of dried leaves in a cigarette pack, a number of dried leaves in transparent polythene bags all suspected to be cannabis in addition to a used Voltic mineral water bottle filled with liquid substances.

The two pleaded not guilty to the charge but were remanded by the court to reappear on May 8.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Abraham Annor told the Court that the complainants were police personnel from Peki District while Victor, a trader, is a Ghanaian from Wli near Hohoe, and Karim is a German student on a visit to Ghana.

He said on April 27, at about 1340 hours the complainants on duty at Todome-Kpeve barrier intercepted an Opel Astra taxi commuting from Hohoe towards Accra driven by Karim with Victor and one Sevil Guzbuz on board.

DSP Annor said at the barrier the accused persons put up an abnormal behaviour suggesting that they might be under the influence of hard drugs.

He said the complainants saw a cloud of smoke emitting from the taxi and also saw the two suspects attempting to conceal the substance they were smoking in the taxi.

He told the Court the two were arrested and escorted to the Kpeve Police station, where a search in the taxi revealed a quantity of dried leaves in a cigarette pack.

DSP Annor said Victor in his caution statement admitted knowledge of the exhibits and stated that he purchased all the exhibits from a source at Hohoe.
