Ghana has joined the rest of the world to commemorate Tuberculosis (TB) Day with a charge on all and sundry to help find undiagnosed TB cases within the society.

A Professor and Microbiologist at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the University of Ghana, Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu says in Ghana, two people die hourly from tuberculosis and over 44, 000 people die annually.

In an interview on Tuesday, March 25 on an Accra based station monitored by GBCGHANAONLINE, Prof. Dorothy said people with reduced immunity are prone to tuberculosis. These include people with HIV AIDS, smokers, alcoholics and malnourished.

“TB is no respecter of persons. TB is everywhere. TB is anywhere, whether you’re rich or poor.”

She also stated that people who do not eat well or stay in overcrowded places are also prone to tuberculosis.

“If you stay at an overcrowded place, you’re bombarded with the disease because if two or more infected persons cough or sneeze, you’re likely to get infected.”

Professor Dorothy advised: “if you cough and see phlegm, report to the nearest hospital and get diagnosed. Treatment of TB is free in Ghana.”

This year’s World TB Day was commemorated under the theme ‘It is still time forging forward towards the fight in finding the missing TB people’.
