The Headmaster of Uthman Bin Affan Senior High School (UBAISH) at Kamgbunli in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Alhaji Osuman Zakaria has appealed passionately to government and other public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the school.
Uthman Bin Affan SHS is the only Islamic secondary school in the Western Region but the school is currently facing many infrastructural challenges.
The school was established in 2008 through a community help spirit spearheaded by Sheikh Mozu with 28 students and has a current population of 800 students.
According to the headmaster, the academic record of the school is one of excellence and was poised to rub shoulders with first class second cycle institutions in the country but fears the Infrastructural deficit will affect the school if not addressed as early as possible.
Alhaji Osuman Zakaria disclosed this in an interview with Daniel Kaku after a ceremony was held to construct a six-unit classroom block for the school by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.
He said that school was facing so many problems which need to be addressed immediately.
He revealed that apart from the ongoing six-unit classroom block, the school still needs additional 12-unit classroom block.
"We have so many problems and now that the leaders have seen it and are providing us with a six-unit classroom block, we know they will do the rest"
"Right now we need not less than 12-unit classroom block", he added.
He stated the school does not have dormitories to accommodate both boys and girls.
"We also need dormitories seriously for both girls and boys, we will appeal to government to provide us with the dormitories"
He also said the school lacks vehicles to run the day-to-day activities in the school.
"Another problem facing us is vehicle and we have been told government has procured some cars to be distributed to Secondary Schools in Ghana so we will call on the District Assembly to lobby some for us"
Alhaji Osuman Zakaria continued and stressed that the school does not have Assembly Hall for meetings and described the situation as a serious one.
"Another serious problem facing the school is that we don't have Assembly Hall and this doesn't give us an opportunity to meet the students. We have over 800 students and with this, how can we meet them and advise them so we are appealing to government to factor this in its plans and construct Assembly Hall for us which can help us to assemble our students", he bemoaned.
According to him, since the school has inadequate classrooms the school is always compelled to ask the form ones and twos to go home anytime the final year students are taking their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He also added that the school was facing furniture problem, "we are begging government and other people to help us because as I am speaking we don't have enough desks".
Asking whether the school has taken steps to resolve these challenges, the Headmaster revealed that the school had written so many letters to Ghana Gas Company, Ghana Education Service and other companies to assist them but nothing has been done to the situation.
"We have taken so many steps to get support, we have written letters to the District Assembly, Ghana Gas Company and other companies, we have written letters to Regional Education Directorate and we had copied the National Headquarters for help", he concluded.
After the interview, this reporter went around the school and saw an abandoned six-unit classroom which has been surrounded by weeds.
Per the investigation conducted by this reporter, it revealed that the project was started by the previous government and it has since been ignored to complete it.
