The Navrongo campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) in the Upper East Region is to be named after the Late Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), C.K. Tedam.
Already, processes have been initiated to make the University autonomous and when the various Parliamentary processes are also completed, it will be known as C.K.Tedam University for Technical and Applied Sciences.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, made the announcement at the State Burial Mass for the late Tedam at Paga in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region on Saturday.
Government in April announced that four public universities would be renamed after the newly drafted Public University Bill is adopted and passed by Parliament without any amendments.
One of the affected institutions was the University of Development Studies which was to be renamed after former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr Rawlings however rejected the offer due to his long-standing principle not to have national monuments and facilities named after him.
President Akufo-Addo described the Late Tedam as “a rock in that painful era of distress, when anti-party elements, occupying high positions in the party launched attacks against the unity and sense of purpose of the NPP”.
The President noted however, “with the Late Tedam’s strong leadership qualities and commitment happily, they failed.”
