UEW old students commend Afenyo Markin for 'swift' intervention

Alexander Afenyo Markin, Efutu MP Alexander Afenyo Markin, Efutu MP

Alumni of Ghartey Hall of the University of Education, Winneba has lauded Member of Parliament for the Efutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo Markin, for his “swift” response to settle tension between students and authorities of the institution.

According to the Alumni, students, have for a long time endured mistreatment from authorities- ranging from abuse of power and intimidation hence they made a call on Winneba land, Neeyi Ghartey and the MP Afenyo Markin to intervene in the issue.

They said Afenyo Markin honoured their called and had a tete-a-tete with the school’s administration to prevent a similar case at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The outcome was that the university administration has issued a communique to meet all students groups and have issues settled amicably.

“We therefore would like to say ayekoo to Hon. Markin for his swift intervention. We are very grateful for his proactiveness in preventing what could have ended up like the KNUST issue,” the statement further read.

THUMBS UP HON ALEXANDER AFENYO MARKIN (MP)

It is often said that prevention is better than cure but in most cases in the Ghanaian setting, leaders most often sit and watch things to degenerate before acting. Hon Afenyo Markin as an MP for the efutu constituency has always shown great leadership in ensuring that things dont degenerate before stepping in to solve the mess. Hon. we want to say kudos for always being proactive..

A lot has been going on at the Winneba campus of UEW ranging from abuse of power and intimidation of students on the part of the authorities. Several appeals to school authorities to sit with students have fell on death ears...

Just about a month ago, one of the pressure groups from Ghartey hall had no option but to call on some of its alumni to have a meeting with them in winneba.

Prior to this, the room allocated to the Chief Garvian who is the traditional head of the hall and for which all past chiefs occupied it had been taken away from the Chief and asked to move out of the hall. The Alumni called on the Hall manageress to have a discussion as to how the decision could be reversed but she said it was a decision from higher authorities so she couldnt do anything about it.

Not only was the room taken byforce, also all the traditional regalia and drums and other items of the group had been seized and taken away by the security men on campus.

The students have endured all these intimidations and were only waiting for a time to explode...However as concerned alumni, we met them and had fruitful discussions and promised them that we were going to call on the King of the winneba land, Neeyi Ghartey as well as the political father of the land.

We called on Hon Markin last week and he promised to get intouch with the school administration to have the issues resolved. True to his words, he has walked his talk and as we speak, the university administration has issued a communique to meet all students groups and have issues settled amicably..

Hon. Markin didnt mince words on peacefm as well when he got the opportunity to comment on the KNUST brouhaha. He boldly called on the UEW management to get to the table and hear the concerns of students. This, we are reliably informed is ongoing.

We therefore would like to say ayekoo to Hon. Markin for his swift intervention. We are very grateful for his proactiveness in preventing what could have ended up like the KNUST issue. We appreciate the need for things not to degenerate before we act..Hon Indeed you are a leader and forever we will remain loyal.

Another notable name worthy of mentioning is Anthony Kwesi Sackey, the current Central regional youth Organiser of the governing party through whose effort we were able to get in touch with Hon. Afenyo Markin.
