UEW to start fifth Campus at Techiman

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) would soon start a fifth Campus in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region to be called College of Distance Education and Extension Services.

The four other Campuses are in Winneba, Ajumako, Ashanti Mampong and Kumasi.

The Vice chancellor of the UEW, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw made this known at the Matriculation of 8,034 students to undertake various Undergraduate, Diploma and Post Diploma courses by distance for the Southern Sector in Winneba.

He said UEW has increased its Study Centres from four in 1996 to 32 and offers opportunity for students to pursue higher education by distance, adding that, four new Centres have been opened at Tema, Ho, Sunyani and Krobo Odumasi.

He said there are plans to increase the number of Centres by the end of the year, saying that, “we intend to open new study centres at Ejisu, Ada, Damango and Bimbila and create additional centres in Kumasi and Tamale”.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said four permanent structures for Student Centres are being constructed at various stages in Techiman, Onwe, Cape Coast and Kukurantumi.

These structures should help the university to decongest the over-populated Study Centres and also provide Office accommodation for the Study Centre Coordinators and Administrator, he said.

The VC said provisions have been made for Crèches and Day Care Centres to cater for the children of nursing mothers who will attend tutorials at the centres.

He said most of the study Centres have also been connected to the internet to enable distance learners to have access, using the tablets or personal laptops at the study centres.

Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said a total of 74 International students from Gabon had registered for a two-year Diploma course in English Education with Pedagogy.

The Registrar of the University Dr. C. Y Akwaa-Mensah administered the Matriculation oath to the students.
