The University of Ghana has commissioned the Diamond Jubilee Hall (DJH), a 1,256-bed facility, as part of its efforts to improve student accommodation on campus.
Management of the school explained that the Hall is a legacy project of UG’s 75th Anniversary celebration and aligns with priority one of the University’s Strategic Plan, which is to provide students with a transformative experience.
During the commissioning ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, described the facility as the result of innovation and collaboration.
She also stated that the project provides a long-term and cost-effective solution to current student housing issues.
According to her, the approach to transforming an existing incomplete building into a modern facility exemplifies UG’s commitment to the 5th strategic priority, which requires the university to use its resources efficiently.
Prof. Felix A. Asante, Pro VC in charge of Research, Innovation, and Development and Chair of the Infrastructure Development Committee, posited that the project was primarily funded through UG’s research internally generated funds. He thanked the staff of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD), whose expertise was used during the construction process.
Mr. Peter Abalansah, the Ag. Director of PDMSD, provided an overview of the new facility’s bed capacity by room and block.
He disclosed that additional facilities such as shops, eateries, and laundry services will be built to improve students’ experiences at the Hall.
