UG Sports Directorate closes gymnasium, suspends ongoing inter-hall sporting activities

Following the confirmation that a student of the University of Ghana has tested positive to the novel coronavirus, the University’s Sports Directorate has announced the closure of its gymnasium until further notice.

The University of Ghana swimming pool has also been closed.

All inter-hall sports activities which are currently ongoing have also been suspended.

These take effect Monday, March 16, 2020.

Although the Sports Directorate says that outdoor facilities remain open for use, they have advised members of the University community to follow the safety guidelines outline in University notices.

“Following the above and other expert advice from both health officials and the Government of the Republic of Ghana, the management of the Sports Directorate wishes to announce the closure of the University of Ghana Gymnasium and Swimming Pool effective Monday, March 16, 2020, and the suspension of the UG inter-hall sporting activities currently underway until further notice.

The Sports Directorate wishes to inform the University community that all outdoor facilities remain open. Staff and students may continue to use the outdoor sporting facilities but encourages the university community and the public to follow the safety guidelines outlined in university notices and information on COVID-19,” parts of the statement reads.

Earlier today, management of the University of Ghana announced the suspension of lectures on its campus until further notice.

The University explained that the infected student had returned to Ghana from an international trip.

Non-residential students of the University have been asked to keep away from the campus.
