The University of Ghana has renamed the library of its Department of Sociology after the late renowned sociology professor and academic luminary, Prof. John Maxwell Assimeng.
The late Prof. Assimeng was one of the foremost sociologists in Ghana and he lectured at the Department of Sociology of the university for over 45 years.
The renaming was done after the three children of the late academic luminary, Shirley Assimeng Stobie, Sylvia Assimeng Archer, and Dr. (Mrs.) Joycelyn Assimeng Dame, renovated and re-equipped the library as part of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of the professor, who passed away in July 2014, asaaseradio.com reports.
The exterior of the entire Sociology library and three other office spaces that are part of the library block were renovated and repainted by the children of the late professor. Also, the interior of the library block was renovated and fitted with modern tiles, new lighting, air conditioning, new storage lockers for students, and new books.
A ceremony was held at the forecourt of the Department of Sociology on Friday, August 2, 2024, to officially commission the Professor John Maxwell Assimeng Memorial Library.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who chaired the ceremony, praised Prof. Assimeng for his contribution to the university.
She also assured the family of the professor that the library they had refurbished in honour of their late father would be maintained properly.
“If we look at what his (Prof. Assimeng’s) life stood for, what we have heard this morning, what we are about to see with this refurbished library, we can see that we (University of Ghana) are right on course.
“I would like to assure the family that we commit to taking good care of what you have provided for us. We seek to continue to partner with you with regard to the maintenance of this facility. But we have the primary responsibility to ensure that when you come back here in two years from now or five years from now, this library is not dilapidated,” she said.
