UN commends Ghanaian peacekeeping contingent in Cote d’Ivoire

Accra, Feb. 2, GNA – The United Nations (UN) has lauded the Ghanaian Military Contingent In La Cote d’Ívoire for the high standard of professionalism and selfless sacrifices, which contributed in ensuring peaceful legislative elections, and the relative peace in the country.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) for the world body’s Mission in La Cote d’Ivoire, Albert Geneard Korenders, made this known.

He said this was manifested in the manner the Unit deployed and readjusted its force to very remote areas in its area of responsibility (AOR) to ensure freedom of movement and incident-free election.

A statement issued in Accra by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Public Relations Directorate said Mr Korenders made the commendation in an address read on his behalf by the Deputy Force Commander, Brigadier General T. Niang during the contingent’s recent medals presentation parade in La Cote d’Ivoire.

He expressed appreciation of the manner the Unit conducted its duties since they were inserted into the mission, and acknowledged the rich experience of Ghanaian soldiers on peacekeeping duties across the world, dating back to the 1960’s.

Mr Korenders commended the contingent’s diverse contribution in the mission which ranged from infantry roles to providing “Level 2” medical support as well as an Aviation Unit and humanitarian outreach programmes to the local population.

He said the construction of a three- classroom block and a toilet for the Nao community was highly commendable, in view of its positive impact on the lives of the people.

The Ghana Aviation Unit based in Bouake, he noted, contributed tremendously in terms of the movement of both military and civil personnel across the length and breadth of the country.

He urged the Unit to remain alert at all times to executive its mandate even as the mission navigates its difficult road to lasting peace, stability and development.

“The people of Cote d’Ivoire and posterity will no doubt remember you all for being part of this significant moment in the country.”
