Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Abenego Feehi Okoe Amartey has reiterated his commitment to introducing free vacation classes to selected senior high school students within the institution's area of operation.

This, Prof Amartey said was an immediate step by the university to remedying the abysmal performances by students in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) over the years.

He bemoaned that most students who sat for the WASSCE are unable to gain admission into the various universities due to their inabilities to attain the required grades.

He further revealed that students' performance at the second cycle level has direct correlation with the universities annual intake hence his decision to introduce this novel initiative.

According to him, students who live in and around Madina are to benefit from the VC's 'Give Back' initiative and his outfit with the support of the teaching staff have drafted a comprehensive module on which the programme would take off next academic year.

"SHS students who reside within Madina and its environs will from the beginning of the next academic year enjoy free vacation tution from the university as part of its corporate social responsibility towards the community" he announced.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Language Centre under the Department of Public Relations, the Vice Chancellor opined that as the university undergoes massive infrastructural and departmental development, it was incumbent on them to give back to the very community in which they have thrived.

"We owe it to the very community we have thrived in and it is against this backdrop that I call for all (departments) support to make this dream a reality" professor Amartey who has been nicknamed action man pleaded.

It would be recalled that this is the latest big initiative by the 'action man' upon assuming office barely two years ago. The university recently also introduced a PhD in Marketing programme and has launched the VC Endowment Fund, a scholarship scheme for brilliant but needy students.
