US citizens in Ghana urged to be alert amid new terror fears

WASHINGTON (AFX) - The US called on its citizens in the West African nation Ghana to be on the alert for suspicious activity amid rising fears of terrorist attacks in many parts of the world.

The advice, contained in a notice to Americans from the US embassy in Accra, was released as threats has prompted Washington to issue a series of increasingly dire terrorism alerts for countries throughout the Middle East, North Africa, the Gulf, East Africa and Southeast Asia.

"In light of the recent bombing attacks in Saudi Arabia and Morocco, it seems appropriate to remind Americans in Ghana that US citizens and interests worldwide remain at risk of terrorist attack, including by groups with links to al-Qaeda," the embassy said.

"Although we are not aware of any new threat information specific to Ghana, we nevertheless urge all Americans to be alert to their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to Ghanaian law enforcement and the US embassy security office," it said.
