A graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ms. Irene Adjei has presented school uniforms to pupils of Gbi–Kpeme High M/A Basic School at Hohoe in the Volta region.
The pupils, numbering about ten had their school uniforms replaced on Wednesday, 26th February 2020.
Ms. Adjei who visited her mother after her National Service in 2018 spotted some pupils who had closed from school in torn uniforms.
According to her, she was touched by the conditions of these pupils and impress upon herself to assist in any way.
“Somewhere 2018, October, November thereabout, I completed National Service and I had to come and pay my mom a visit as I said, she is a native. So I came and I was walking through town one day – the area where this particular school is located and then I met some schoolchildren.
“They happen to just close from school, walking down the street going home. So on their way home, I met them and I realised most of them were in torn uniforms. You could see that some of their shorts were torn and you could see their underwear. For some, the armpit of their shirt was torn, some with no buttons at all. There, I was thinking through myself that I really do something for them,” Ms. Adjei said, after presenting the school uniforms to the student.
Ms. Adjei, currently unemployed said she saved her monthly salary from her last job since encountering these students.
“Currently I’m not working. My mom was ill somewhere last year September and I have to stop work in Accra and come down here, so I have been here since September”
“I got the materials [fabrics] and all the sewing items, and I spoke to two seamstresses in my church. I told them that God has laid upon my heart to do something like this,” she added.
She is hoping to reach out to many pupils in such conditions.
Ms. Adjei holds a first degree in French and Political Science from KNUST.
