Sunyani May 19,GNA - Wheelbarrow and truck pushers at Nana Bosoma Market in Sunyani on Wednesday ran helter-shelter for their dear lives when word went round that soldiers had come to the market to avenge an alleged vandalism perpetuated by one of them. One of them allegedly caused a military truck full of soldiers to crush at the busy weekly market. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Charles Wesley Baah, Brong Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) who confirmed the incident to the GNA said the unit was yet "to take a statement from the soldiers". He could not describe the type of military vehicle nor provide its registration number, but said the unit's investigators had gone to the accident scene and had not returned.
The MTTU Commander said the military vehicle had arrived from Kumasi to pick soldiers from Sunyani to perform special operations at Bawku. The windscreen and glasses of the vehicle's doors were broken but none of the soldiers got injured, ASP Baah added. He described as incorrect reports that soldiers in two pick up vehicles had gone to the market to beat and arrest the manual workers and their wheelbarrows and trucks to the police station. ASP Baah said the truck pushers took to their heels themselves leaving behind items they were conveying to the market when they saw the soldiers and police men at the accident scene. He said the items left behind by the truck pushers had been taken to the MTTU office for identification and collection by the owners.
