Accra, Nov 24, GNA- Alhaji F. Bawa Salifu, Deputy General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has said that the union is grooming women to fight for their rights and to lead the crusade against practises that impede their progress.
''Therefore, women in the union should not to sit on the fence but participate in all education programmes that would equip them to tackle union issues, matters on violence against women, prevention of HIV/AIDS and broken homes'', he said.
Alhaji Salifu said this when he swore into office members of the Greater Accra East and West Regional Women's committees' of the union in Accra at the weekend.
He urged them to show concern in trade unionism "because we want to encourage gender balance. Positions in the union are not the preserve for men.''
Ms Edna Opoku-Boakye from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) was elected Chairperson of Greater Accra East branch of the union while Ms Comfort Owusu of the same company took the Chairperson position for Greater Accra West.
