Unit Committee Chairman arrested for fraud

Suhum (E/R), Feb 16, GNA - The Police at Akim Oda have arrested the Unit Committee Chairman of Nyamekye Djewene Nkwanta, near Akim Oda, Emmanuel Ayim, for allegedly misappropriating over 8,400 Ghana cedis belonging to the people of the community meant for an electrification project. The Odikro of Nyamekye, Baffour Peter Ansoh, told a youth meeting that in 2005 the people initiated the project with Ayim as the Chairman of the Project Committee. He alleged that Ayim collected 10 Ghana cedis from each member of the community as registration fee for the supply of meters. In 2007, Ayim told the people to pay 26 Ghana cedis each since he had to bribe some people at the Electricity Company of Ghana at Oda and Koforidua and Energy Commission before the meters would be supplied. Baffour Ansoh said over 87 people paid the money to Ayim. He said in 2009, Ayim again asked the people to pay extra 30 Ghana cedis since the money he had earlier given to the people at the ECG offices at Oda and Koforidua and the Energy Commission was insufficient. Baffour Ansoh said to their dismay, out of 87 people who registered for the meter only 20 meters were supplied to the community. Baffour Ansoh said one Mr Stephen Affer and Mr Kwasi Agyeri were sent to the ECG offices at Oda and Koforidua and the Energy Commission to find out if they had received some money from the community but they all denied receiving any bribe from Ayim.

When the police at Akim Oda were contacted, a spokesman of the police confirmed the story and said Mr Ayim would be put before court after investigations have been completed.
