Koforidua,(Eastern Region) 15 Oct. The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) is holding discussions with the University of Ghana, Legon, for the establishment of a Peace Institute at the University. Mr. Mike Awuah-Asamoah, National Director of GUNA, announced this at the inauguration of the New Juaben branch of GUNA at koforidua at the weekend. He explained that the purpose for such an institute is to train experts in peace negotiation and settlement so that such persons would always be available for the country and the African continent. Mr. Mike-Asamoah said the situation in the country and the African continent demands that the issue of peace should not be ignored, saying peace negotiations need to be tackled from a scientific approach. He expressed appreciation of his association to the restructuring of the United Nations secretariat but said the continued existence of the veto power by a few members negates the principles of democracy in the structure of the UN. Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, New Patriotic Party shadow spokesman on Foreign Affairs and MP for New Juaben North, said countries that fail to pay their contributions to the UN have no moral justification to criticise the organisation. He explained that by the non-payment of their contributions, such countries deny the UN and its specialised agencies the means to perform the duties assigned them. Mr. Yaw Barimah, MP for Koforidua, called for the creation of a just society in which no one would be discriminated against. Mr. Emmanuel Adu-Boateng, New Juaben Municipal Chief executive, appealed to GUNA to design programmes that would link foreign investors and their Ghanaian counterparts to establish businesses in the country to create employment for the youth.
