University Lecturers To Boycott Classes

ACCRA, Ghana (PANA) - Ghanaian university lecturers intend to stage a one-week boycott of classes 15-19 May to back their demands for improved salaries.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana announced Tuesday that its executive committee took the decision of the boycott in Kumasi, central Ghana.

In a resolution, the committee said the councils of the universities had failed to address issues concerning salaries and conditions of service.

The committee asked members of the association to comply with the directive in their interest to drive home their demands.

A long strike by university lecturers a few years ago cost the institutions one academic year.

The government has been under intense pressure from workers who want to push for salary hikes, as this is an election year.
