The National President of the Technical University Teachers Association (TUTAG), Prof. Uriah Stonewell Tetteh, has called for salary adjustments for university teachers to enable them to have decent living conditions.

He said that university teachers are paid less than what they deserve, hence the need for salary adjustments.

According to him, the current state of the Ghanaian economy has also negatively affected the living conditions of university teachers, noting that “if you look at the pre-single spine, we [university teachers] were better off.”

“It’s all about getting better because we always need better. If you look at the sub-region, university teachers are paid less than what they deserve. So we keep pushing for them to come back to the drawing board,” he added.

Prof. Stonewell Tetteh was speaking in Tamale at the opening of the 48th National Delegates Congress of TUTAG.

He explained that “because of inflation and the dollar rate, our money keeps dwindling, so we keep engaging the government to find other means of making us better.”

Infrastructure for technical universities:

Prof. Stonewell Tetteh called on the government to invest in infrastructure in technical universities to boost technical and vocational education training (TVET) in the country.

He said many of the technical universities lack infrastructure, workshops, and laboratory equipment, hindering their ability to effectively train students.

The TUTAG president said that as TVET-oriented universities, the technical universities need well-resourced workshops and laboratories to be able to function.

Prof. Tetteh said, “The government must be able to give us more, try and get more equipment in the labs, the computer labs, and the workshops because we’re TVET-oriented, skills-oriented, and hands-on, so we need more of this equipment to be able to boost the teaching and learning environment,” he added.
