The University of Ghana, Legon, said that it has withdrawn letters requiring fresh students for the 1999 - 2000 academic year to pay 300,000 cedis as part payment of registration fees.
The Registrar of the university said formal letters for the withdrawal, which will indicate fees payable as approved by the University Council, are being despatched to the students.
The Students Representative Council (SRC) and National Union of Ghana Students had announced an intended mass protest to back demands for the withdrawal of the 300,000 cedis deposit. At a press conference later, they asked the government to look for alternatives of cost sharing as the amount was too high.
