Director General for Ghana Health Service, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare has warned that disciplinary sanctions would be applied to management of public healthcare facilities who charges any National Health Insurance subscriber monies considered as co-payment for healthcare services.

He underscored that charging additional fees from healthcare seekers bearing NHIS card is illegal; adding that Parliament is the only institution who bears the right to approve fees and taxes in any form after due process has been adhered to.

Dr Nsiah Asare was speaking in an interview with www.ghanaweb.com where he stressed that the Authority would not tolerate any illegal activity by recalcitrant Providers.

He indicated that arrangement is being made to reimburse all claims owed to NHIA-accredited facilities this year to curb such instances

In relation to that, he said, National Health Insurance Authority is restructuring to maintain a regular payment system and not go above the 3-months payment period.

“We are working towards a situation where we would have a regular payment system and not go above the 3-months period. Any fee charged at a public facility is regulated by parliament and it’s illegal to charge your own fees’’

He added that the NHIA would review unrealistic tariffs imposed on various accredited medical facilities in the country.
